The Advaita Meditation Center is a spiritual community teaching and practicing Advaita philosophy as a way of life. The following are the key principles guiding our activities.
Activities
We offer regular classes, retreats, reading groups and short courses related to meditation, Advaita and similar philosophies, in small and large group settings. We respect and support the tradition of Advaita and its living teachers.
Organization
We are a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization consisting of a student body, a voting membership, an elected board of trustees and a senior tutor. Our governance reflects the tradition of Advaita and maintains a democratic process characterized by information sharing, joint decision making and broad accountability.
Participant Responsibilities
Participants support our community through their spiritual practice and well-intentioned participation. In addition to tuition and activity fees, participants can help meet organizational needs through voluntary service and donations.
Teacher Responsibilities
Those entrusted to teach hold the welfare of those in their care as the most important aspect of their service to the organization. They "practice what they preach" and teach by example as well as through instruction. Teachers encourage critical thinking, individual autonomy and self-reliance. Teacher/participant interactions take place within reasonable, ethical and mutually-agreeable boundaries.
Self-Determination
Reason and direct personal experience are the most important factors for confirmation of what is taught. Each participant determines his or her own beliefs, practices, and involvement and trust in the organization. This process is supported by open and free discussion and debate.
Openness
We are open about our philosophy, organizational aims and spiritual practices. We welcome anyone who wishes to join us in the study and practice of meditation and the Advaita philosophy.
