What Classes Are Like

We host an assortment of events at our two venues: Worcester House, a historic former residence in Waltham, Massachusetts, and Hill House, our retreat center on Halfway Pond in Plymouth, Massachusetts. We hope you’ll check out our meditation and Advaita course descriptions. Here's what you can expect when you take part in some of our courses and activities

Evening Classes

On a weekday evening, 7:00 PM at Worcester House in Waltham: Students arrive, greet their friends and find a seat. A brief period of silence allows the busy-ness of the day to subside. Class often begins with a short meditation period. A practice, topic or short text may be presented, followed by a group discussion based on your questions and experiences from the preceding week.

During the refreshment break around 8:15 PM, participants from all classes meet and enjoy food, drink and conversation. Class resumes for another 45 minutes or so, and everyone heads home around 9:30 PM.

Workshops

Saturday or Sunday, 8:30 AM at Worcester House in Waltham: After relaxing with refreshments, you will gather with other students for a short preview of the morning or day ahead. This is followed by several sessions on relevant topics or practical instruction. You will have ample time to try things out, ask questions and discuss how you found the experience.

Half-day workshops feature at least one mid-course refreshment break, while full-day workshops include a vegetarian lunch and one or two short breaks. Larger workshops may be divided into smaller groups.

Weekend Retreats

Friday, 8:30 PM, at Hill House in Plymouth: After putting your personal belongings in your room, you will meet with the retreat leader and other participants for introductions and a preview of the weekend's events.

Around 6:30 on Saturday morning, the group gathers for a period of meditation, followed by a light breakfast if desired. Small classes alternate with periods of practice or attentive work. After lunch, you will have free time in which to rest, explore the grounds, relax and, in warmer months, swim. An afternoon class leads into another period of meditation, followed by dinner. Before going to bed, you can socialize or study privately.

Sunday follows a similar pattern through lunch, after which we tidy up the house and leave around 2:00 PM.
